KDHamptons contributing editor Lauren Thayer Weiss shares her Dinner Diary for: VINE STREET CAFÉ~SHELTER ISLANDS HAUTE  SPOT SPOT FOR DINING!

We love to make the trip from Sagaponack to Shelter Island to go to one of our favorite local restaurants, Vine Street Café. Last night was no exception…we headed out with a couple of friends for an evening of delectable local fresh food. Chef/Owners Lisa & Terry Harwood opened Vine Street Cafe in 2003 and it has been flocked with visitors and regulars ever since! Taking the bucolic ferry ride over from North Haven to Shelter Island only adds to the charm and fun of the night…

Recently they added an adorable market behind the restaurant to pick up take-out and head out picnicking or fill up on treats like their spiced bar nuts. The market also features Chef Terry Harwood’s trademark brand, Blue Canoe (www.bluecanoesi.com), which are organic and all natural BBQ sauces, rubs and condiments. Lisa stocks the shop with organic Chocolate Walnut Bars, Scotchies, Granola and Biscotti. Between my husband and our friend James Amaden I think they cleared out the store of their famous specialty nut tins!

Terry works with area farmers, fishermen & vineyards and features their local specialties on seasonal menus.  Our group’s favorites of the evening from the summer menu were the local bay scallop ceviche, pickled beet and goat cheese salad, the chicken friend chicken and lobster bouillabaisse. We ended with a simple and sweet strawberry short cake for dessert!

After a delicious meal we headed back over on the ferry, accompanied by an incredible sunset….and then out for a nightcap [Sidecars for the men and Rosé for the ladies!] on the porch at The American Hotel in Sag Harbor.

A perfect night out in the Hamptons!
