KDHamptons catches up with interior designer Andrea Schumacher, who has transformed her new Kips Bay New York Showhouse space into a modern speakeasy—The Pink Rhino Club—inspired by her childhood in Nigeria and enduring love of Morocco. At its core is wallcovering from her upcoming Vale London collection, based on original artwork by her grandmother, Elizabeth Monath, who studied under Dalí and Léger. Rich layers follow: Artistic Tile stonework, Kohler fixtures, Kravet drapery, Romo upholstery, and Made Goods furnishings, complemented by lighting from Visual Comfort and Hector Finch and rugs from Rug & Kilim. A whimsical rhino-shaped bar by Sylvan San Francisco and blush accents complete this deeply personal yet welcoming room.  Andrea shares more in this new Design Diary, below…

“My room at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York is inspired by my childhood in Nigeria and an enduring love for Morocco, imagined as a modern speakeasy we’ve dubbed the Pink Rhino Club. The design started with wallcovering from my upcoming collection with The Vale London, based on original artwork by my grandmother, Elizabeth Monath, who studied under Dalí and Léger in Paris in the 1930. This particular piece, titled Gulli Mask, holds a special meaning — it was drawn during a visit she made to see me as a child while we lived in Ibadan, Nigeria. My father’s career took us around the world, and I love the way this pattern captures the joy and nostalgia of that time. To build on that layered history, we brought in remarkable craftsmanship and materials from our generous sponsors.”

“Artistic Tile provided all the tile and stone, grounding the space in rich texture, while Kohler’s bathroom plumbing fixtures bring timeless elegance. For the furnishings, Kravet drapery fabric frames the space beautifully, complemented by Romo’s lounge chair upholstery and the striking chairs themselves from Made Goods. Modern Matter hardware adds jewelry-like detail in the bathroom, and the walls sing with Benjamin Moore’s paint colors and hallway wallcovering donated by Phillip Jeffries. Rug and Kilim’s area rugs layer warmth underfoot, Lillian August’s side table brings sculptural grace, and Hector Finch’s bench pendants add a soft glow. The centerpiece of the bar area — the whimsical rhinoceros-shaped dry bar — comes courtesy of Sylvan San Francisco, and Visual Comfort’s lighting fixtures and lamps infuse the space with a luminous ambiance. Throughout the room, we leaned into the whimsy with blush accents and that playful Pink Rhino bar, bringing a sense of humor and warmth to the space. This is a room rich in history — one that is deeply personal, yet welcoming to anyone who steps inside.”
