KDHamptons Design Diary: How to Create Dining Room Drama with Mabley Handler

“Every dining room in the Hamptons should be so fun!” Austin Handler tells KDHamptons

Hamptonites spend A LOT of time in the dining room: entertaining, cocktailing, telling stories, having a date night and of course, eating! Designing a chic, comfortable, cozy, dramatic dining room is a common request from clients of Mabley Handler Interior Design.

The Hamptons husband and wife design duo Austin Handler & Jennifer Mabley tell KDH, “Dining rooms are usually the most formal room in a house, so we like to create a Hamptons dining room that is both sophisticated and playful, a room that entices you to entertain by drawing you in rather than making you feel like you need to keep out.”

KDHamptons loves the Mabley Handler team, not only because they happen to live up the street from Doc & me, but also because I love their fresh take on the haute Hamptons look. Jennifer & Austin share, “Our clients always ask us how we describe our style…Some of the terms we’ve come up with to try and describe our design point of view are ‘Beach Chic,’ ‘Modern Beach,’ and ‘New Hamptons.’ Our design style is fresh and relaxing, and very comfortable.”

“Our inspiration for this room was the multi-color blue chevron fabric by Jonathan Adler for Kravet [Pattern: Wabash, Color: Aquamarine] used on the drapery and back-seat panels in the dining chairs. We saw the fabric at the Kravet showroom, and loved the combination of peacock blues and aqua tones, it really set the color scheme for the whole room. The aqua and peacock blue tones in the room are bold and fun, yet still relaxing. They are referential to the ocean and to the Hamptons in a fresh and current way.”

“By combining the fun, fresh Jonathan Adler/Kravet fabrics with high-quality Kravet furniture in white that had the weight of a formal dining room yet the light, airy feel of a Hamptons summer house.  And since Mabley Handler Interior Design works exclusively in the Hamptons, we wanted to create a room that was representative of our vision for the direction of design in the Hamptons.”

The Mabley Handler Team shares the Dining Room Highlights below:

1. Furniture: Dining table, dining chairs, buffet and bench are from Kravet (to the trade only).

2. Fabrics: All fabrics are from Jonathan Adler’s Utopia collection for Kravet. Note: This room was the premier of these fabrics.

3. Light Fixture: This linen drum light fixture with silver nail heads and Swarovski crystals is a collaboration between Michelle Hatch New York (Nail head-embellished home furnishings) and Bone Simple Design (Drum shade light fixtures).

4. Artwork: All paintings are by noted local Hamptons artist Paton Miller.

5. Candelabras: One of our most favorite objects ever are these gorgeous lacquer painted turned maple wood candelabras, from Dunes & Duchess.

A final note from Jennifer & Austin~ “We often use shades of soft blue, green, beige and grey because they are very soothing…Many of our clients live in New York City, and when they come out to their house in the Hamptons for the weekend, they want to leave the stress of the city behind them. Our intention is to create spaces that literally make our clients exhale the moment they walk through the door….”
