KDH Design Diary With Shannon Willey Of Sea Green Designs

Shannon Willey, owner of Sea Green Designs, has provided beachy chic furnishings and design to Hamptons homes for the past ten years. “We celebrate our coastal environment with color and stylish sustainable design,” shares Shannon [pictured above], “Sea Green Designs is an eco-friendly store and I try to obtain as much inventory as possible from local East End artisans who work with reclaimed materials.”

KDH stopped in to see what’s in store now and to find out more about Shannon’s aesthetic:

KDHamptons: How long have you been living in the Hamptons? Why do you love it so much?
Shannon Willey: I’ve been living in the Hamptons since I graduated from FIT in 1992. I grew-up just outside of Buffalo in a rural area very similar to the Hamptons, but without the beautiful ocean, bay, and beaches. I love the water, the New England style homes, and the proximity to Manhattan.

KDH: Please describe your Hamptons home, and decorating style?
SW: We live in a cute 3-bedroom ranch that I would describe as a cottage compared to many of the homes I have worked on. It’s cheerful and cozy. My decorating style is definitely coastal inspired because of our surroundings. I believe in bringing elements of the environment into the home. So my style changes depending on where I’m working.

KDH: Describe the aesthetic of your store and your current inspiration for KDHamptons readers:
SW: The aesthetic of the store is definitely coastal. The shop is small as far as home furnishings stores go. I carry the coastal theme throughout, but we have transitional looks, traditional looks, cottage looks all set up in vignettes.

KDH: Are you constantly redecorating your home? Which is your favorite room?
SW: Yes, I’m always decorating my home. It’s a work in progress, and I’m always coming across new things that inspire me. The kitchen is probably my favorite room though. I love to bake, so I like to spend lots of time there.

KDH: Do you have a “best kept secret” for acquiring antiques or accessories?
SW: I go trade shows in High Point, Atlanta, and NYC, but some of my best items are from vendors/artisans who have found me. Many of just stopped in with some great products and we’ve built relationships from there.

KDH: If you have to choose, who is your favorite designer?
SW: Phoebe Howard is my favorite designer. She has a really timeless style. I also love Tobi Fairley and her use of color.

KDH: As business slows down in the winter, what are your favorite things to do?
SW:  This is a tough question because I like to do so many things, but if I narrow it down to the winter months, I would say a perfect day would start with a 7am wake-up, an hour, at the gym, home-made pancakes or waffles with the kids, and time to actually read some of the great decorating magazines that I pick-up. Then, some family time with Wii-bowling or Just Dance 3 and maybe I would finish of the evening at Little Red. My daughter loves the pasta; so even if we couldn’t get a baby-sitter, we’d take the kids.
