Farm Country Kitchen is perched on a hill facing the Peconic River.

Farm Country Kitchen is a rustic eatery nestled on the banks of the Peconic River in Riverhead. Offering home made soups, sandwiches, paninis, wraps, salads and entree specials served up in a converted colonial home built in the late 1800’s, it is the perfect spot for comfort food with an inspired chef’s twist. The dinner menu changes seasonally depending on fresh local ingredients. KDH has been hearing about FKC for a while, so I grabbed my foodie friend Sharon Kerr and zipped over for a quick lunch. [p.s. it only takes 25 minutes to get to Riverhead from Southampton in the off season!]. While there, we caught up with the owner of Farm Country Kitchen, Tom Carson, to get the scoop on this secret spot:

KDHamptons: How long have you owned Farm Country Kitchen?

Tom Carson: For the past eight years. I am the creator and original chef of the cuisine.

KDH: How would you describe your cuisine?

TC: I think that we offer a menu that delivers flavor for all pallets.

KDH: I met Chef Todd Sabatini on our way out [psst readers! What a hunk]. What a talented and likeable guy. How long has he been with Farm Country Kitchen?

TC: Todd has been here 2 years. Cooking great food runs in his family~ eight generations of chefs to be exact! His grandfather was the chef at Delmonico’s in Manhattan.

There is a cozy little dining room inside, or you can choose the porch for a calming river view.

The sparkling river meanders by the back of the restaurant.

KDH: What is the most popular dish at Farm Country Kitchen?

TC: The crowd favorite appetizer is typically our seared sea scallops, and the favorite entree would be our Crescent Duck and Tomassio Pasta.

KDH: I loved all the sneaky sauces we found here and there on our dishes. Chefs specialty or Farm Country Kitchen vintage recipes?

TC: The sauces are a combination of both our efforts. Fan favorites are definitely the wasabi, wild berry, and balsamic reduction recipes…but don’t ask me for the recipe!

Sharon loved her Vegetarian Stuffed Portobello Mushroom with sun dried tomato hummus, artichokes, feta cheese, cilantro pesto and a balsamic glaze.
I opted for the Park Bench Salad: spring mix, carrots, cabbage, grilled chicken salad with goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes, candied walnuts, cranberries and their secret balsamic dressing~ so good!

KDH: Typically my readers are heading East, not West. What makes Riverhead a destination that we should all check out?

TC: Riverhead is a town with great shopping. The Tanger Outlets are a major attraction. A bypass for the East End traveler is the benefit Riverhead experiences from them. Meanwhile, the North Fork offers that country feel that those who visit are looking for. You can spend the whole day here shopping and eating.

KDH: I need to come back to taste the Espenza Spinach Sandwich [Baby spinach, cajun chicken, sliced mango, avocado, red onions, goat cheese, cucumbers, grape tomatoes, with citrus orange kumquat dressing], or the Sea Scallops for dinner with my husband. Will you be open all winter?

TC: Yes, we are open all year round. We have a Facebook page for news: Farm Country Kitchen or go to www.farmcountrykitchen.net
