The Bugatti L'Or Blanc

An unnamed businessman in Abu Dhabi set a new record last week when he bought the world’s most expensive car, a custom Bugatti L’Or Blanc, for a breathtaking $2.4 million. The one-off Veyron L’Or Blanc, meaning “white gold”, is unique in its flashy style and swirled design, and uses porcelain [yes, I’m serious], inside and outside the vehicle. There’s even a porcelain caviar tray inside, as well as porcelain fuel caps, oil caps and wheel badges [good thing, I almost didn’t order one otherwise].

“At first, it seems to be an unusual idea to use porcelain in a car, especially in the world’s fastest convertible,” said Dr. Stefan Brungs, Director of Sales and Marketing at Bugatti Automobiles in a June 30 press release. “But this is what Bugatti stands for: the realization of exceptional ideas whilst striving for the utmost in quality and aesthetics. This allows us to continue Ettore Bugatti’s heritage, who himself loved to experiment with new materials.”

The 407km/hr convertible, the fastest one made, was built by Bugatti in partnership with KPM, a 248-year-old Berlin-based porcelain maker. Bugatti, known for making the world’s fastest cars, also held the most expensive car record previously, with its Bugatti 300 Veyron 16.4s, estimated at $1.74 million [Simon Cowell reportedly has one!]. That car’s six-year production run ended last week with the 300th car rolling out of Bugatti’s famous factory at Molsheim, France, according to Construction Weekly.

Drive down any given Main Street in each Hamptons hamlet and you will lose count of the cars that cost three times as much as your summer rental: Bentleys, Ferraris, Maseratis, and Maybachs galore. Looks like the The Bugatti L’Or Blanc has just relegated those amazing autos to the back seat!
