This Time4Teens event [albeit a swimsuit show!] is a charity fundraiser to raise money for bereavement services for East End teens who have suffered the loss of a loved one. “We focus on the needs of teens related to bereavement and loss through education and counseling. We build hope for future generations by facilitating opportunities such as a yearly four day bereavement retreat as well as workshops and seminars throughout the year,” shares Laraine Gordon, who spearheads the program.

Laraine Gordon is a licensed clinical social worker with a private practice for the last 15 years in Southampton, NY. Time For Teens, Inc. is a not for profit organization that was primarily created to hold an annual four day bereavement retreat for teens. Ms. Gordon’s innovation has been to create an environment geared toward grieving adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19. Gordon shares,”Having a private practice working primarily with teenagers, it has become apparant that there is a strong need for this service on the East End of Long Island.”

Ms. Gordon has extensive experience in bereavement counseling and decided that teens would benefit from a retreat specifically geared towards their interests and needs. The four day bereavement retreat is Monday-Thursday August 1 – 4.

Here is what to expect during retreat week according to the Time4Teens organization:

*Group Therapy is held daily with professional licensed therapists, teens will be encouraged to talk about the person who has died and learn tools for coping with grief.

*Psychodrama, a creative technique, is offered to teens during retreat week. Historically, psychodrama traces to the principle of play, acting out experiences through dramatic methods.

*There are activities daily including but not exclusive to: kayaking, a golf clinic, yoga, swimming and basketball.  Teens will have a choice during certain times as to which activity they would enjoy the most.

*Lunch is provided each day, served at 12:30 p.m.

*The cost of the program is $25 per child to help cover expenses along with donations made from local community members and businesses on the east end.

Time4Teens hosts a monthly bereavement group from Sept-May for the teens who attend the camp.
