Paris 2013

Kimberly shares…..We took a family trip to Paris over New Year’s. My mother-in-law graciously treated us to a week at an unbelievably beautiful and oh-so-perfectly Parisian apartment on the Place des Vosges. The apartment is owned by an Australian couple, is originally from the early 17th century like much of the Place, and was decorated by famed interior designer Jacques Grange who curated legendary homes for icons including the Princess of Monaco and Yves Saint Laurent. If you close your eyes and picture an elegant Paris apartment, this surely would be it to every detailed beam, sconce and French tulip!

The neighborhood was perfect — on the edge of the Marais. We had croissants and cappuccinos every morning sitting at the window on the Place. Our 19-month old daughter Vivienne would open the doors and greet the world with her baby doll and Madeleine.

We spent the days walking everywhere, lunching at fun spots in the neighborhood like Café Des Musées for cassoulet or venturing off to Café Angelina for insanely rich hot chocolate, only after devouring caviar, salmon and foie gras– the Parisian staples!

Vivienne played in the many playgrounds by herself or with young local children. She was particularly taken by the carousels. At Christmastime, each arrondissement erects one for the neighborhood children. She rode many different carousels over the course of our trip. They left such an impression on her that when she awoke in the morning and wiped the slumber from her eyes, her first utterance was “horse”.

Bern and I explored Paris in the evenings. We enjoyed so many meals! The best was at the well hidden Verjus where the 7-course tasting menu [below] was nothing short of magical. But we also dined at La Societe and Derrière both of which are supremely fun on top of being culinary gems.

We had after dinner drinks at Avenue, while watching the buccellati-style lights line the boulevard. Scotch and a cigar at Café de Flore [below] were enjoyed huddled under the heat lamps so absorb all of Paris walking by.

We experienced all things Parisian– shopped in local markets, got kicked out of a taxi, enjoyed retail therapy in St. Germain and imbibed afternoon cocktails at the famed Hotel Costes [above, middle]. The City of Lights was as impressive as ever, and from our perch on the Place des Vosges, could not have been more perfect for a family getaway to kick off an exciting and promising New Year. A giant rainbow saw us off as we jetted away from Charles de Gaulle airport~ c’est parfait!
