NEW KDHamptons Sailing Diary: Casting Off in Montauk!

Last week on a perfect sunny day, KDH and my first mates Rita Schrager and Genifer Lancaster headed to Montauk for a day of sailing with Darius Ali, founder of Sail Montauk, which operates out of the Montauk Yacht Club. The conditions were perfect as we set sail out of the inlet and towards Fort Pond Bay. Our 22 foot Catalina sail boat was equipped with a coolers stocked with ice, water, a bottle of Domaine Ott, and some great reggae tunes, mon!

Darius founded the company in the summer of 2011, having learned to sail on the waters of Montauk, and wanted to share that experience with as many people as possible. Sail Montauk offers a variety of sailing charters and lessons on the East End, and the best news? It’s pretty affordable! Darius shares, “We hope that by providing affordable charters and lessons we serve as a catalyst to promote the growth of sailing in the community.” Check out our KDHamptons Sailing Diary below:

The sailing trip was hands on, but you can do as much or as little as you want. Darius told us about the Flotilla Boat Parties that Sail Montauk offers. “We’ve had bachelor and bachelorette parties, reunions and company retreats. It is a great way to get out on the water with all of your friends. We send out multiple boats with 4-5 people on each, sail, race or have water gun fights, then raft up for a picnic and some swimming.” That sounds like a lot of fun!

Look at this spectacular entertaining house that the Entenmann’s family built on the water. Darius shares, “They have big family dinners there. All of the sliding barn doors open on all four sides of the house, and the kids fish off the deck and swim.”

After sailing we headed over to Ditch Plains to check out the surfer boys…I mean the surf.

And then we saddled up to the Clam Bar on the way home for some delicious grilled swordfish, scallop ceviche, and shrimp! A perfect Monday in Montauk, with no traffic!
