Enjoying all of the outdoor activities available to us in the Hamptons is one of the most fun reasons to live on the East End, especially when you can EAT the fruits of your labor! Clamming with friends and family on a sunny morning is so superfun, easy to do, and you really don’t need any prep or training. Check out our pal Dovile Kankalyte’s NEW KDHamptons Clamming Diary for tips on how you can get in on the fun:

KDHamptons: Where did you and your friends go clamming?

Dovile Kankalyte: We went clamming in the Shinnecock Bay, just between the inlet and before the heliport on Meadow Lane in Southampton.

KDHamptons: Explain how-to clam for KDHamptons readers?

Dovile: Well I have my own foot “smushing technique” that I use to find the clams. Once we hit the water, up to our ankles, I just sort of bury me feet around in the sand, toes squishing, searching around to feel for a smooth rock like shell. You should never bury your feet more than six inches deep in the sand. Once you feel a shell with your feet, reach down to find your clam, and pull it out. Load your clams in the bucket and repeat! On this day I only found four clams, not the best score …..

KDHamptons: Were there any crabs in the water? Did they bite?

Dovile: The only “dangerous” part of clamming, is encountering some crabs in the sand. Crabs that sometimes decide they want to attack you! Pinching at your toes and feet, while you digging around. It doesn’t hurt so much, but my poor little toes!

KDHamptons: What are the tools that you need to go clamming?

Dovile: You only need three tools: Your feet, hands, and a bucket!

KDHamptons: Did u need a license to go clamming?

Dovile: Permit from the town. Easy to get.small fee( not sure how much exactly)

KDHamptons: When is the best time to go clamming during the season?

Dovile: You can clam all summer long, but my favorite time to go is at the end of summer when the temperature is a little cooler. We always go at low tide in the morning.

KDHamptons: What is the best outfit to wear clamming?

Dovile: Make sure you are comfortable, and since you’ll be getting little wet, best to wear your swimming suit or tank and shorts.

KDHamptons: What were you all celebrating?

Dovile: We were celebrating my friend Sima’s bday. We made the whole day a celebration, starting with the clamming in the morning, followed by a few hours at the beach swimming, and laying in the sun before the party.

KDHamptons: What was the menu for the dinner party?

Dovile: For an appetizer the girls made a fresh garden salad with produce we picked up at Halsey Farm stand. For the main entree for Sima’s birthday was linguini with clams, which we steamed with garlic, onions, herbs, and white wine. The whole meal tasted delicious!
