One of my favorite things about living in the Hamptons is that I constantly meet talented new people that live here year round. This is no “sleepy beach town” crew of folks, the Hamptons is a haven for artists, writers, actors, photographers, architects, nature lovers, and more, which curates the most interesting enclave of residents. This week, I had the pleasure of meeting Sag Harbor furniture designer Maximilian Eicke, the owner/founder of Max ID NY. Founded in 2009, Max ID NY specializes in minimalistic design and engineering with a passion for classic materials and craftsmanship. Launching a new collection each year, Eicke designs prototypes and manufactures collections containing a range of about 15 unique products ranging from stools to chairs to tables. Learn more about Maximilian in this NEW KDHamptons Design Diary, below:

KDHamptons: How long have you been living in the Hamptons?

Maximilian: In 1999 my parents moved my sister and myself to Sag Harbor permanently in order for us to attend middle school and high school, where I ended up graduating from the Ross School in 2007. Prior to that, my parents started bringing us out to the Hamptons since 1992, where we would spend the summer months around my parents art gallery on Main Street in Sag Harbor, while we were still living in Germany during the school year (where I was born, 1989).

KDHamptons: Does living in the Hamptons inspire your designs?

Maximilian: It’s always impossible for me to come up with an example of how the Hamptons have specifically inspired my designs from an aesthetic standpoint. However, I am very aware of how the Hamptons have inspired my company from a business standpoint, due to the incredible support that the community gives to its artists and designers out here. Being backed by clients and fans who all have a very strong entrepreneurial can-do attitude inspires me to keep pushing it further. In terms of design influence, I would say I am inspired by the Dutch designer Gerrit Rietveld, and the De Stijl Movement.

KDHamptons: How would you describe your furniture in your own words?

Maximilian: Minimalistic design and engineering with a passion for classic materials and craftsmanship. The philosophy of my company is to create furniture collections that bring a fresh new aesthetic combined with comfort to the design world. I also occasionally like to push the boundaries and scales of materials that are seen more in classic designs, like marble, and combine them with my very geometric aesthetic.

KDHamptons: What do you love most about living on the East End?

Maximilian: What I remember growing up loving about the Hamptons [that was so different from Germany] was the freedom of living outside that my parents allowed my sister and myself to have, allowing us to discover things on our own while being in an embracing and protective community such as Sag Harbor, which made us all feel so safe and welcome.
