KDHamptons New Discovery: Cast Away With Sail Montauk!

SHARE

Wish you could sail off into the Hamptons sunset? NO PROBLEM! KDH just learned about a cool company that offers sailing charters and lessons on the East End, and the best news? It’s pretty affordable! It’s funny, although we Hamptonites are surrounded by water, sailing is not a super popular outdoor activity here. Well Sail Montauk is about to sink that stereotype!

Sail Montauk was founded by Darius Ali in the summer of 2011. Darius learned to sail on the waters of Montauk, and wanted to share that experience with as many people as possible. Sail Montauk provides hands on sailing experience along with private charters and bare boat rentals. He shares, “We hope that by providing affordable charters and lessons we serve as a catalyst to promote the growth of sailing in the community. Whether you’re here for the weekend, the summer, or stay here year round, we invite you to Sail Montauk with us.” Check out our first KDHamptons Sailing Diary with Darius below:

KDHamptons: How many boats are in the Sail Montauk fleet?

Darius Ali: We have 4 Catalina 22s in our fleet. Each boat holds 4-5 adults plus a captain, so we can easily accommodate a couple on a romantic sunset sail, a group of friends, or a larger group with a party on multiple boats.

KDHamptons: Where do most of your sails happen?

Darius Ali: Sail Montauk operates out of the Montauk Yacht Club. Depending on the wind, length of sail and our passengers’ preference, we may sail out of the inlet and towards Fort Pond Bay, or take a spin around Lake Montauk.

KDHamptons: What is the most over-the-top sailing adventure you offer?

Darius Ali: Our Flotilla Boat Parties are very popular with all kinds of groups, and a ton of fun. We’ve had bachelor and bachelorette parties, reunions and company retreats. It is a great way to get out on the water with all of your friends. We send out multiple boats with 4-5 people on each, sail, race or have water gun fights, then raft up for a picnic and some swimming.

KDHamptons: Do you have a most memorable sailing story?

Darius Ali: I have many! We have had several marriage proposals on board….and it’s always great to help plan a special moment like that with someone.

KDHamptons: What makes your company so special?

Darius Ali: Sail Montauk offers a unique hands on sailing experience for everyone that comes on board. All of our captains are USCG certified and instructors, so you can learn and get as involved as you would like. If you prefer to just sit back and relax, we’ll do all of the heavy lifting. Because we have several smaller boats rather than one large one, we can offer a private charter experience at a great price point.

KDHamptons: What is the average price to go for a sail?

Darius Ali: Our private sailing charters start at $170 for two people, and private lessons at $95 per hour. We also offer open sailing sessions for adults and teens, which are a great way to get out on the water and meet some new people, starting at $75 per person for a two hour session. There’s a sail for everyone!

KDHamptons: Tell us about the Sail & Swim package?

Darius Ali: Our sailing trips are hands on; you can do as much or as little as you want.  Midway through we’ll tie off for a swim and some water games, or relax on the boat with your picnic. Waterguns and pool noodles are kept on board, and we encourage cannonballs, so make a splash!

All boats are equipped with coolers stocked with complimentary ice, soft drinks and water. Feel free to BYOB or bring snacks to enjoy. You can also connect your playlist to our speakers to get the boat rockin’. [$240 base price includes first two passengers]
