NEW KDHamptons Feast End Diary: Join The Ultimate Coffee Klatch In Montauk at LƎFT HAND

“After working in Montauk for several years, I felt that the town needed a true espresso bar where you could get more than just an average “cup of joe,” says LƎFT HAND owner Yannis Papagianni.

Ready to join the ultimate coffee klatch in the Hamptons?  Head on over to the recently opened LƎFT HAND in Montauk, a true espresso bar with a great looking design and laid back vibe.  Owner Yannis Papagianni shares, “I was inspired to open LƎFT HAND by a shared love of good coffee and the coffee culture itself.  We are neither trying to reinvent the wheel, nor cater to the masses. We simply want to serve coffee the way we think it deserves to be served, and how we like to drink it.”

Last year, Yannis experimented with the idea at The Montauk Beach House with the addition of a small espresso bar dedicated to servicing hotel guests. The popularity of that project sparked the idea to find a nearby location where he could expand upon the concept. With the backing of Larry Siedlick (owner of The Montauk Beach House), Yannis was able to establish LƎFT HAND Coffee in the heart of Downtown Montauk, just two blocks from the beach.

Yannis tells KDHamptons, “I am excited about the opening of LƎFT HAND because we are bringing in third wave coffee to Montauk, and giving people out here a chance to get a taste of what’s already been happening in the city and metro areas for the past few years.
This summer we are looking forward to offering some of our cold beverage house recipes as well as a rotation of different blends and single varietals in our espresso program. We want to educate people about the different ways of brewing coffee.”

Together, Yannis and Larry turned to local creative designer Walt Lindveld (who designed The Montauk Beach House) to bring the hand-crafted artisan aesthetic of the LƎFT HAND brand to life.  Walt envisioned a bespoke approach, largely inspired by the desire to “reclaim + repurpose”, using found materials and furnishings purchased from local yard sales.  This is evident in the driftwood-clad bar front (collected from various Montauk beaches); the barn wood wall treatment (from a dismantled New England barn); and the wire spools repurposed as coffee tables.

The menu consists of the usual suspects found in most espresso bars as well as some new  coffee concoctions made to order that have emerged from European-style cafes. LƎFTHAND offers a dark and light blend for drip coffee; for espresso there is a house blend consisting of three-bean varietals; and a single origin organic espresso from Colombia. New blends and single origin espressos will be rotated throughout the year.  Being that it is based in Montauk—and opening in time for the busy summer season—a large emphasis will be given to cold beverages with offerings like cold brew, Yama-style cold drip coffee, and European imports like Cappuccino Freddo.

The tea selection will be curated by Bellocq Tea Ateliers, complete with a dedicated service tea bar featuring seasonal loose leaf offerings. Coffee and tea will also be available for retail purchase, as will brewing accessories for those that wish to enjoy a similar experience in their own home. Pastries and baked goods, a small selection of cold beverages and bites will be available as well.  A well-curated selection of newspapers, select magazines, and coffee table books will also be incorporated in season.
