KDHamptons Design Diary with Henry & Co Designer Duo Stephanie Woodmansee and Elle Clymer
Henry & Co Design is a super talented boutique residential design firm based in New York City. KDHamptons recently met this stunning design duo at the 2014 Hampton Designer Showhouse presented by Traditional Home and benefitting the Southampton Hospital. Stephanie Woodmansee and Elle Clymer co-founded Henry & Co Design on a mutual belief that a home should be meaningful and enjoyed, always reflecting a client’s personality and aesthetic. Henry & Co Design offers a distinct and fresh perspective while preserving the importance of classical design and architecture. Learn more about these glamorous girls in this new KDHamptons Design Diary, below:
KDHamptons: You understand the importance of designing a space that balances chic sophistication with timeless ease, combining documentary prints with unexpected patterns, rich in texture and color. How do you describe your aesthetic in your own words?
Henry & Co: Our aesthetic is built on an appreciation for classical architecture and traditional details. We like to create rooms that feel collected over time with an unexpected personal touch to make the space or home feel unique.
KDHamptons: What inspired your room at the Traditional Home showhouse [above]?
Henry & Co: Our room inspiration was sparked when we came across the fabulous Gray Malin photograph, part of the Aqua Glam collection. We wanted to create a space that represented vintage beachside/ poolside entertaining. Something that was one step farther than the typical Hampton Summer house. We also wanted the space to represent our design aesthetic, showing our love for old and new pieces, lots of color and texture and making the most out of a small space.
KDHamptons: Your designated space in the showhouse was [potentially] a bit awkward as it contained the staircase and landing between the first two floors, yet you made it one of the best “rooms” in the house. Share a tip for someone struggling with a tough space at home?
Henry & Co: The truth is, sometimes the smallest spaces in a home become our favorite spots! We wanted to take the typical landing and create a space where people would want to stop and spend time in. For someone who is struggling with a space at home, it is best to identify what you want to do in that space, find furniture pieces that are functional, yet appropriate in scale and proportion for the room, then layer with artwork and personal touches so that the room feels finished! In this specific setting, a custom size banquette allowed for more seating and created that intimacy we were hoping for. Everyone loves a cozy corner to curl up and read a book or chat with friends.
KDHamptons: Where did you find that amazing wall paper? or is it fabric? and the ribbon tape trim?
Henry & Co.: It is fabric….. from Quadrille!! It has been one of our favorite prints for a long time and we were so excited to have the opportunity to show it off here. The ribbon tape trim is from Samuel & Sons. It was a last minute DIY moment. [It sure worked girls!]
KDHamptons: Why run the white wall boards horizontally, vs vertically?
Henry and Co: The contractor actually decided that before we were assigned the space. However, we love that it is not the traditional orientation.
KDHamptons: Why do you think color is making such a comeback in Hamptons beach houses?
Henry & Co: There is something beautiful about a white/neutral homes, but with so much access now to room inspirations via pinterest, instagram, etc… I think clients want to add their own spin on things and color is a great way to do so!
