KDHamptons recently caught up with East End author, acupuncturist, herbalist, and women’s health & fertility expert, Aimee Raupp, who aims to educate and inspire women, improve their health, prevent disease and celebrate their beauty.  After the summer launch of her latest book, Yes, You Can Get Pregnant, an amazing Deepak Chopra endorsement, and all the exciting press that has followed, Aimee looks forward to “embracing the fall season, its crisp air,  yummy soups and cozy sweaters.”  In this NEW KDHamptons Beauty Diary, Aimee shares Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) tips on adjusting to the fall season, keeping our energy up,  and boosting our immune system as the seasons change.

Amy shares: The season of fall in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) correlates with the organ of the lung which dominates the skin, breathing, body fluids metabolism, blood circulation, immunity and the emotion of sadness and grief. To maintain optimal health there are certain foods according to TCM that one should consume to live in accordance with the seasons and protect the health of your body–these types of foods are specifically focused on promoting the production of body fluids as the dry weather of fall usually causes an itchy throat, a dry nose, chapped lips, rough skin, hair loss and dry stools.

The very best foods to consume now to keep your health optimal this fall are: nuts, seeds, pear, pumpkin, honey and organic dairy products (as long as you digest them well). I also advise patients to eat more food with sour flavors like pineapple, apple, grapefruit and lemon as these foods have astringent properties and thus prevent the loss of body fluids and dry, itchy skin that often accompanies the colder weather.  Likewise it is advised that you reduce the intake of pungent flavors as such things like onion, ginger and peppers as these foods induce perspiration and deplete the body of fluids (and dry us out!)

When it comes to the emotional aspect, as we head into the fall season it is an important time to focus on letting go. Fall is a time of refinement and getting rid of things that are not serving us. So, hear me when I say: let go of all that stuff you are holding onto… it’s weighing you down and holding you back from all you desire in this life!

I find one of the best ways to do this is through the breath, as the lungs control the breath. Having a daily meditation practice is important always but especially during the fall. When I’m meditating this time of year, I recommend that upon your inhalation you focus on bringing in the new, fresh and exciting energy that surrounds you and on your exhalation you focus on releasing and letting go of the old, heavy ‘stuff’ from your past that no longer serves you. To help you with your fall meditation practice, I came up with a mantra that you can use during your (hopefully daily) meditation practice:

Upon inhalation, repeat silently to yourself: I am fresh and new; and upon exhalation, repeat silently to yourself: I let go of the old.

Lastly, when it comes to fall recommendations it is important to remember that the main TCM organ associated with this season is the lungs. And the lungs play a major role in the quality of your skin.  To avoid the dry, itchy skin that often creeps in with the fall season, remember it is important to stay hydrated internally by drinking enough water (approximately half your body weight in ounces) and taking a daily dose (about 1 teaspoon) of omega 3 supplements (I prefer cod liver oil) as well as to keep your skin externally hydrated with oils such as coconut oil or sweet almond oil (or my Aimee Raupp Body Butter, shop NOW and use coupon code Fall20 and receive 20% off your Aimee Raupp Beauty purchases now until December 1, 2014).

I hope you find these tips useful and easily applicable to your daily life.  I also wanted to take a moment and let you all know that beginning in late October, I will be hosting monthly lectures in both the Nyack Wellness Center and in the New York City (location is still being determined) on a variety of topics such as beauty and fertility and living an optimal life.
