Black Swan owner Randy Kolhoff shares, "I enjoy the hunt, finding that unusual piece that has character.”

KDH loves popping in to Randy Kolhoff’s great antique store in Bridgehampton called Black Swan Home, where I have purchased lots of unique pieces for our Hamptons home and beach cottage. Not only is Randy a great curator, he is also a very talented artisan and carves incredible wood whale sculptures that are a perfect Christmas gift!

Black Swan can be considered an alternative to the traditional furniture store. The store contains interesting and unusual home décor items, styles ranging from Primitive, Colonial, and Classical French to Victorian, Mission, and even some Mid Century finds. With a recent move from Southampton to Bridgehampton, I was excited to see what Randy has in store for the holiday season. Check out his KDH Design Diary below:

KDHamptons: How would you describe your new Bridgehampton store?

Randy Kolhoff: Our space in Bridgehampton is 1700 square feet of beautiful, unique, one-of-a-kind antiques located in the heart of Bridgehampton’s Main Street. We have a large enough showroom to give each piece a proper display. With ten foot high walls, even the largest pieces in our collection fit nicely here.

KDHamptons: We love this fun piggy rocker, where did you acquire this piece?

Randy: The folk art pig is a unique item I could not pass up. I found it in a small outdoor market outside Chicago as part of a collection of rocking horses.  With a pink wooden bow wrapped around her neck, Miss Piggy has so much character, and is a wonderful example of American folk art dating back to the 1920’s. [cost $975]

KDHamptons: What has been the biggest difference between operating in Southampton vs. Bridgehampton?

Randy: Although we enjoyed our 5 years in Southampton, we find our central location in Bridgehampton opens us up to all of the Hamptons. We still see our friends from Southampton weekly, but we are now only a short drive from Sag Harbor and East Hampton as well. Being in Bridgehampton also has some additional perks like being only steps from the fabulous Pierre’s, Topping Rose, and Bobby Van’s for a great lunch or dinner after work!

KDHamptons: Love the industrial letters for a contemporary Hamptons home, what’s the story behind them?

Randy: The Large industrial letters are made of metal and come from outside the Detroit area. I have a “picker” who collects signs and letters from buildings being dismantled in that area. I love their look, as well as the personal touch one can give a space with initials, words, or monogram their home. [cost $375]

KDHamptons: Have you noticed one particular Hamptons design trend?

Randy: I try to focus on a balanced mixture of styles. In the Hamptons, our design trends are always blending furniture eras, materials and colors. Our clients gravitate toward the truly unique finds; those pieces that are unusual and equally functional. Although, this sometimes creates difficulty when I am buying. I search long and hard to find those special items.  But I know when I do, those are the pieces that will not be in the showroom very long!

KDHamptons: How do you manage to source such unique items from across the country and still oversee the daily needs of the store?

Randy: I am starting my eighth season this year with Black Swan Antiques. Over the years, I have developed a wonderful network of “pickers” throughout the country who cater to my unique buying patterns. I also love to get on the road and shop some great out of the way markets throughout the country myself. Our inventory is always changing~ we have new product every week, all year long, so I never stop looking for that next perfect piece!
