Alexandra Von Furstenberg

Designer Alexandra von Furstenberg attended Parsons School of Design and Brown University, where she studied costume design and art history. In 1995, Alexandra joined the design team of her mother-in-law, American fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg. During her ten-year career at DVF as Creative Director and later as Director of Image, Alexandra was instrumental in the re-launch of the iconic wrap dress as well as reinforcing the relevance of this American brand.

After relocating to Los Angeles in 2006, Alexandra focused on designing exclusively for the home. A synthesis of art, home furnishings and fashion, the collection consists of signed, limited edition pieces made out of acrylic – a nod to the 1970’s when acrylic was widely regarded as the material of the future.

Beginning with a sleek 8-piece collection ranging from side tables to an oversized dining table, the designs were named in honor of their inspiration – diamonds! (i.e. “Brilliant,” “Trillion”). The gem-like collection is illuminated with neon colors.

Alexandra’s second collection “Voltage,” debuting in March 2009, is made of mirror and smoke-colored acrylic. The 9-piece collection (in addition to an expanded range of accessories) is sultry, bold, and strong. For Alexandra, choosing a darker, smokier palette for her sophomore collection was a natural evolution from the bright, pop aesthetic she embraced in 2008.

KDH caught up with Alexandra to find out more about her chic & sleek new product line…check out our favorite pieces below, as well as her exclusive KDHamptons Design Diary:

KDHamptons: Congrats on your chic new AVF collection! Where does your design inspiration come from?
Alexandra Von Furstenberg: My design inspirations for this collection have come from many different areas such as precious gem cuts, the lines of a sports car~ even mechanical hardware! [we love the Luminous Acrylic Desk with neon accents that were inspired from the grill of a sports car, below].

KDH: Which piece do you think is a perfect fit for a modern Hamptons beach house?
AVF: My top pick would be the Sledge coffee table in blue and clear, a perfect compliment to the sea and the sky.  [AVF also offers tabletop accents like the Acrylic Cocktail Tray, $258, and her popular Acrylic Charm Candy Bowls offered in seven different colors, $388].

KDH: How many colors are in the collection?
AVF: I offer 11 colors from Neons, Jewel tones and Black/white opaques. There is something for everyone.

KDH: You are a West Coast girl now, but grew up in New York and spent summers in the Hamptons. What do you love most about the East End?
AVF: Yes I did spend many summers in the Hamptons, it’s a beautiful place. I adore the spectacular large beaches, the Hamptons architecture, and the amazing giant hedges some of the houses have…

KDH: You have a strong fashion background, how has switching gears into interior design changed your personal style?
AVF: You know my personal style is always evolving and changing, I love having fun with it….Whether it’s fashion or furniture, they both require taste and with that comes the style – it all goes together, one will inspire the other…

KDH: Where can KDHamptons readers shop for your designs?
AVF: My products are sold in the Hamptons at H Groome in Southampton, and at Maison 24 in Bridgehampton. [for more info go to www.avfhome.com]
