Is Shippy's Pumpernickel The Best Kept Secret In The Hamptons? Not If You Know Where To Find Juicy Steaks, Jumbo Crab Legs & Giant Bratwurst!!

Shippy’s Pumpernickels restaurant is part of the DNA of Southampton Village since the 50’s. Shippy’s is nothing fancy, just old fashioned cooking that never disappoints, nor surprises! The menu is heavy on German specialities including bratwurst & sauerbraten, and- no surprise here- a very large beer selection! Loyal patrons include an interesting combo of old Southampton blue bloods and locals who all go for the juicy steaks and fresh seafood. I remember the first time I went to Shippy’s 16 years ago and it really has not changed at all since! Last night, I met up with my old friend Andrew Wahl for dinner who describes Shippy’s perfectly, “It’s for Hamptonites who don’t care about the scene or being scene.”

KDH is not big on bratwurst so I ordered chicken cutlet with grilled tomatoes and gruyere and Andrew ordered the broiled salmon [see pix below!]. Of course we both had to add an order of potato skins, and a cup of clam chowder, and a slice of bavarian cream pie before rolling out of our cozy booth! Try to sit in Zena’s section~ she’s like an Irish aunt you have not seen in years who always makes you feel at home.
